Ikanos and Wintegra Announce Availability of Validated Ethernet Bonding Solution for VDSL2
Bonding Solution Enables Carriers to Service Customers at Longer Loops with Revenue-Generating Triple Play Services
Fremont, Calif. and Austin, Texas, September 19, 2007 - Ikanos Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: IKAN), a leading developer and provider of Fiber FastTM broadband solutions, and Wintegra today announced an Ethernet bonding solution for their mutual VDSL2 customers. This solution combines Wintegra's market-leading Access Packet Processors and Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM) bonding software with Ikanos' multi-mode VDSL2 central office (CO) chipsets, which offer the industry's highest performance and lowest power. The jointly developed solution is designed to deliver a compelling mix of validated hardware and software, which enables carriers to rapidly deploy services.
"By aggregating traffic over multiple copper pairs via Ethernet bonding for VDSL2, carriers will be able to offer revenue-generating triple play services to consumers who are located on longer access loops," said Jag Bolaria, senior analyst at the Linley Group. "Ethernet bonding for VDSL2 also enables carriers to offer premium-value, higher data rates to existing customers, by combining traffic on multiple copper lines."
A key benefit of Ethernet bonding at the line-card level is that it simplifies provisioning and minimizes operational issues for the carrier, which can now bond two or more copper pairs that are connected to the line card. Wintegra's latest software, which includes Ethernet bonding for multi-mode VDSL2, also offers TR-101 functionality in both the data and control paths. Ikanos' multi-mode VDSL2 chipsets and firmware support the transmission of EFM fragments to facilitate line card bonding.
Wintegra's Access Processors are the foundation for many industry leading DSLAM manufacturers because they offer a unique mix of high-performance, low-cost, DSL-optimized silicon and a feature-rich suite of production-ready software. Wintegra's processors are fully software compatible across its DSL product line, providing scalable solutions that enable a wide range of products with minimal engineering resources.
"This collaboration is a prime example of how the end result can far exceed the value of each individual company's contribution," said Arnon Mordoh, vice president and general manager of Wireline Systems at Wintegra. "Both Ikanos and Wintegra have market leading DSL products, but this combined bonding solution offers our customers a validated, unique competitive silicon and software advantage for a rapidly evolving marketplace."
"Line-card-based bonding is a truly differentiated offering," said Piyush Sevalia, vice president of marketing for the Access Products Group at Ikanos. "Carriers are searching for ways to increase revenue and ROI by reaching more customers with revenue-generating triple play and IPTV services. We believe that Ethernet bonding over VDSL2 is an effective solution for these carriers."
The initial EFM bonding software release from Wintegra, which runs on its Access Processors, is available now and is fully interoperable with firmware on Ikanos' multi-mode VDSL2 CO chipsets.
